In October 2006 Assyrian Aid Society - Australia contributed Au$12,622.19 to AAS-Iraq for Relief and Health.
Since the foundation of the Assyrian Aid Society in 1991, and as a result of the tragic situation of our people and the unnatural conditions of others in that period, and the economic blockade imposed on the region, a new Humanitarian and health Affairs Dept. had been developed. Its mission was summarized in helping people who returned to the destroyed villages, and with many kinds of assistance, as follows:
A. Relief team:
Due to the increment of the suffering of displaced people from the troubled cities, the task of this team was to provide the returnees of tents, blankets, household utensils, agricultural tools and cash assistance to the needy, according to our possibilities. As well as distributing food substances and continuously until now, side by side with the official authorities that provide services to them and which do not meet the minimum required purpose.
B. The medical and therapeutic side:
Since the establishment of the Society, we have formed a medical team with a mobile pharmacy, and many visits were done to the villages continuously to provide medical and therapeutic services, particularly in remote areas, which were far away from these services during the economic blockade.
We have also provided assistance to those who needed surgical operations, which required to be held outside the country in coordination with other humanitarian societies and according to our abilities.
C. We have also noticed the need to open charity pharmacies in several areas to provide treatment services to the needy, so five pharmacies were opened and were distributed to the following areas:
Main pharmacy in Duhok city centre
Charity pharmacy in the Zakho district
Charity pharmacy in Shaqlawa
Charity pharmacy in Erbil city centre
Charity pharmacy in Sarsank
These pharmacies have been closed for lack of need except Sarsank pharmacy.
D. After Iraq liberation, and during the movements of the coalition forces towards liberation the cities out of the northern regions, and down to the Nineveh governorate and its suburbs, the relief teams of the Assyrian Aid Society was accompanying these forces to provide food and medical items to the librated areas, starting with Sheikhan district and Alqush, down to the other towns and villages and inside Mosul City.
